Do let us know the outcome of this story! However the translation was done, this person is cheating you, and if they're registered on ProZ you can express their opinion of them here:

Human made Jun 20

I am working with French but not in that field.

In my eyes the translation is human made.

Il ne parle pas francais... Jun 20

I suppose the discussion is in English because the poster does not speak French.

Andriy

Scams, Post-editing/machine translation, Business issues...

Google Translate:
The initiator of the queue may never find it, but at least the respect of the rules will be safe.

I think it would be a shame to hide such an example, it is not so often that a user of translation intervenes on these pages to convey his experience.
Especially as the story is not over.
First, I look forward to clues on the kind of box that can deliver such translations. The "slow power" of a computer is unusual.
Then, info about the prices! I would like to know how much this product costs to the end consumer.

Philippe

I am against hiding that post Jun 20

I am against hiding that post and think the colleague is exagerating.

It's true that normally the language of this forum is English but that does not justify to hide an interesting post.

I don't work with English either and that this post is in English is not a problem for me. As a translator you have to have at least a basic knowledge of English, otherwise surviving in this industry is difficult nowadays.

Bonjour Philippe,

Don't hide it Jun 20

Yes, according to a strict interpretation of the rules, the topic should have been started in an English forum, not a French one (but then English-speaking users could complain, in principle, that there is another language than English in it – although they won't). On the other hand, only those who speak French (and English) can have any opinion about this. The purpose of rules should be to keep order, not to nitpick or enforce rules just for the sake of it.

Besides, I often see topics started in other languages than English in the English forums. I don't protest. I just avoid them if I can't understand them.

I don't think Proz is the right place to express such linguistic intolerance as a certain anonymous user has done, and he or she has breached general site rule number 2 ("Mutual respect, professionalism and fair play are expected.
Site users are expected to treat each other with courtesy, whether posting publicly or making direct contact, and are advised to act under the assumption of good faith. Harassment of, or attacks or ad hominem statements on, individuals or groups, of any form, as well as discouragement of another's use of the site, will not be tolerated.") in both posts.

Nobody is forcing anybody to read this topic if they don't like what is written in it.

Is there a better place for a non-French speaker to ask French speakers for help? Jun 21

Hi all,

I may have inadvertently started it all, since I approved the initial post in this thread (sorry about that). The problem was just that: a question posed to French speakers, by someone who does not speak French. While in general the language of each forum should be respected, there may be occasional topics (like this one) where it makes more sense to have it here than in another forum.

I think perhaps the OP didn't understand that threads in the French forum had to be written in French. He probably thought the French forum was for discussing translations into French. He couldn't understand the others to see what the threads were about.
And he was asking -interesting!- questions only French speakers could answer.
If he could speak French he wouldn't even have had to ask!

So I think tolerance is indeed in order here.
