Remote interpreters must be skilled at navigating the interactional patterns and power dynamics inherent to communications with diverse clients. This talk categorizes the situations that require remote interpreters to depart from the role of “language conduit” to perform critical “customer service” and “cultural clarifier” acts. Dr. Dolce will share examples of these various speech acts being performed both effectively and ineffectively, highlighting the characteristics that make for skilled work in these advanced areas of interpreting practice. Discussion of concepts such as interpreter-client transparency and power dynamics will be supported by concrete examples, so as to provide attendees with a meaningful distillation of how these complex processes manifest in their day-to-day work as remote interpreters.
