I appreciate your video no this topic. It's a pity you didn't use a large TMX file with millions of TUs. What is the import time per million TUs on a middle range MacBook?

You don't necessarily need a text editor. Perl can do this pretty easily:
perl -p -i.bak -e "BEGIN{@ARGV=<*.tmx>} s/\"FI-01\"/\"FI-FI\"/g"
This should do the replacement in all tmx files in the current working directory and create .bak backup files of the originals.

I'm not sure what the problem is, it looks like the command is correct, and you are in the correct directory. Is the .tmx.bak file created at all?
I've uploaded a tmx and a .txt that contains the command here. Just zip it out, open a terminal window, cd into the folder, copy-paste the command and see if it does what it's supposed to. Then copy your tmx into the same folder and try again.
In principle, it could be some annoying small thing like you used the wrong kind of hyphen. Or maybe your shell is interfering with things; if the command I just sent doesn't work, maybe you need to use single quotes instead of double quotes. You can also try specifying the file name directly, like so:
perl -p -e "s/\"DE-DE\"/\"FI-FI\"/g" < full/path/original.tmx > full/path/modified.tmx

I just tried with a Late 2010 MacBook Air with 4 GB of RAM: it took about 15-20 minutes to import and reorganize (= create the index) the full, 2 million TU's Finnish-Slovenian TMX in Wordfast Pro 3.1.3. Not bad IMO, for instance compared to memoQ and Déjà Vu on Windows, which both require to split the TMX before you can import it.

Thanks, I just tried MacVim. It worked OK (that's how I was able to import the TMX in WFP), but it wasn't blazingly fast (UltraEdit in Windows is much faster) and usage was a bit awkward (unless I missed something). When performing the find/replace operation, the message "2001222 substitutions on 2001222 lines" was displayed rather quickly (in about 2 minutes) on the status line (at the bottom), but 1) the original text was still visible in the editor and 2) I could neither close, nor save the file instantly. If I selected Close, it would take MacVim a good 10 minutes before asking me if I wanted to save the file first. It's like the program was still busy doing the substitutions after having displayed the message. Is it the way it's supposed to work? In other words, displaying the message is merely counting the substitutions that need to be made, but the program still needs to actually make them after that.

Half a minute here: http://www.screencast.com/t/NnohTXP3 Fast enough, I'd say.
Importing in CafeTran takes about one minute. Not long enough for a cup of coffee or a ciggy.

Sure, MacVim opens the 2 million TU / 1.4 GB TMX fast, but I was talking about the time it takes to perform the find/replace, and then save/close it. UltraEdit on Windows can do both in less than a minute, but as far I could see, it took MacVim far longer than that, maybe about 10 minutes.

1 million terms is four times the official Wordfast Pro specs as mentioned in the product brief:
Supports up to 250,000 entries per glossary
I'll test the time it takes to import the supported number of entries. For your full size glossary, I'll use Wordfast Server.
