why some agencies ask for references?

I can't help smiling the agency would also ask for references for references...for references)

As a rule, if Employer needs a specialist, then (1) relevant credentials, (2) a portfolio (sample works), and (3) a personal interview should do nicely as one's guarantor. Indeed, certain associations and membership also counts, but in this case they consciously(?) ask not peers, but for rivals.

Regardless of the option being there and the forum being public, I'd still consider it common courtesy to ask before sending. But maybe that's just me being old-fashioned 😊


Weird or not, that's how Proz is: you don't even need to be logged in to read the forums.

When you put something out in public view, you can't expect others to ask all the forum participants if they mind that others read their contributions, as this is not a private space. It would be like saying that before sharing a news article with a friend, you should ask the journalist if he or she minds.

If you don't like that others read what you've written, you can always edit your posts and remove whatever you want.

You can appreciate or not to your heart's content, the matter of the fact is that the content of this forum is publicly available to ANY internet user [just log out and come back to this forum as Joe Bloggs, if you don't believe it] and searchable by any search engine. You can't change that, so better adapt to it.

Whatever you post on the publicly available part of the Web becomes public domain - end of story.

I don't mean to pile onto Natasha, but this is a pretty important topic for translators to understand, so I just wanted to add something here. In law, putting something online is considered (mostly) equivalent to publishing it. Obviously things are a bit complicated by the fact that in a forum like this, it's very hard for the publisher (some combination of Proz and their server) to have full control over comments written in real time.
