What is a page? | Feb 23, 2016 |
Is a page 200 words, 300, 600? If I want to think about how much I have translated, I think in numbers of words, not pages. (The validity of that could conceivably be different for non-alphabetic writing like non-romanised Chinese.) | | | Edina Jerlagic Bosnia and Herzegovina Local time: 04:44 Bosnian to English + ... I work in a state-owned company and I would like to inform my boss about it, because he asks me to translate 15 pages daily. And I say it's too much for one working day (07.30 to 16.00 h).

If the text does not involve a lot of looking up of terms, then it would be reasonable of your boss to expect you to translate 300 words per hour (or up to 500 words per hour, if the text is easy and you are a fast typist). Some translators boast 800-1000 words per hour, but that is only possible if the text is highly repetitive and if the translator uses specialised translation software. | | | Ed Ashley United Kingdom Local time: 03:44 French to English + ... How many words in a page? | Feb 23, 2016 |

And I say it's too much for one working day (07.30 to 16.00 h). If a page is defined as follows, then we're talking 7,500 words: "For a page with 1 inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, and minimal spacing elements, a good rule of thumb is 500 words for a single spaced page" - http://howardcc.libanswers.com/faq/69833 At the first company I worked for, a page was roughly 300 words, but even that would bring you to 4,500 words. I have translated this many words in a day, but I didn't finish at 5pm and I didn't feel human at the end of it. Anyway, I find the notion of X pages per day arbitrary, as 2,000 words of highly technical German is easily as time-consuming (and tiring) as 4,500 words of more digestible source text. We still need to know what your definition of a page is, though. | | | Edina Jerlagic Bosnia and Herzegovina Local time: 04:44 Bosnian to English + ... TOPIC STARTER

We still need to know what your definition of a page is, though. I type in Aries 11 and my page is like A4 format paper with minimum spacing. Ofcourse it depends on the text type, if it has photos and graphs, but I'm speaking here on average. E.g. last week I translated Instructions Manual for a device and now I translate service usage conditions. 15 pages per day is way tooo much for me cos it's ongoing translation, my max is 6 pages of quality translation without any software tool cos we do not use it here. I'm afraid my boss isn't well informed so he's trying to force us to do more. But I would like to prove him he's wrong to allow us to work normally without stress and pressure. | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 04:44 French to English

Thank you, Where can I find that EU standard? I would like to show it to my boss. I also learned that the standard in the Hague is 5 pages of translation daily. Is it true?

Sorry for the typo Once I needed to get this standard, I asked directly the EU. This standard is fixed somewhere, I will look for it later today. And yes, a "normal" daily output is considered to be 5 pages but I am not sure whether it is fixed anywhere. However, most translation agencies in their websites indicate this number as the standard number of pages to be translated per day per order. | | | Inga Petkelyte Portugal Local time: 03:44 Lithuanian to Portuguese + ... Thank you so much Inga this is so important and helpful for me I will wait for you to send me that standard cos I like to speak with arguments. I'm not sure about reaction of translation agencies here (we have only 3-4 tr.agencies in Sarajevo) but I will certainly ask them to do that for me. Thank you again.
