If you're a half decent translator - and more importantly, have learned to say "No" when the project is just not suitable for any reason - then you simply don't have to put up with working conditions that you don't like. That's the point of being a freelancer.

And if you really are accepting low paid work and your rates are dropping all the time, then YOU are doing something wrong.

I agree with you, but it would be far easier if we knew beforehand which agencies are professional and which agencies are not.
We must behave always in a professional way, but in many cases we discover unfair practices only months after engaging in a working relationship with an agency.

Surely you're not asserting that not translators behave unprofessionally in their dealings with agencies? I'm sure many agencies have discovered unfair practices only after engaging in a working relationship with a translator. It cuts both ways.
