"....MT propagandists always stress how futile it is to try to resist the progress of technology. Machine translation keeps getting better and it’s here to stay, they tell us. Change is inevitable and translators better get with the program if they know what’s good for them......"

Thank you Sep 23, 2016

Inevitable indeed!

"Real translation is based on the understanding of the meaning of the words, which is something that a software program will never be able to do."

I wonder how many times a MT engine stops to consider, "what is the author of this document trying to convey and to what audience?"

"Alchemists assure us that turning lead into gold is just a few years away. In the meantime gold-painted nuggets of lead are cheaper than gold and often serve the purpose just as well, and the quality of the gold paint continues to improve."

Yes, now technology provides a means for turning lead into gold, literally.

Soon there will be machines that can turn words into gold.

Time doesn't march on. Not since Einstein. Sep 23, 2016

This linear conception of time, and allied to it this linear conception of human existence in which things endlessly just get better, has surely had its day.
