Merci

bibliographic rules Mar 1, 2021

When a piece of writing has a bibliography, a particular referencing style will have been determined (Harvard, APA, etc.). All documents in the bibliography will follow a specific set of rules. You need to find out what referencing style has been adopted and stick to the rules of that style.

When a piece of writing has a bibliography, a particular referencing style will have been determined (Harvard, APA, etc.). All documents in the bibliography will follow a specific set of rules. You need to find out what referencing style has been adopted and stick to the rules of that style.

By the way, as a rule, bibliographies are not translated. The reason for this is that they are referring to documentary sources that have been used, in the version cited in the bibliography. They are traceable and enable readers to track down the sources used, which can only be done if the language of the publication is unchanged.

That said, some bibliographic entries do contain brief amounts of text and that may include a date. In such cases, again, the referencing style determines the format you will need.

My suggestion would be to contact your client and ask:
- if they expect you to translate the bibliography (bearing in mind that the titles and reference codes will not be translated)
- what referencing style applies

I translate academic articles from time to time and I specifically ask about the bibliography. The general rule is "don't touch it".

(What follows may or may not be relevant. But it just in case it is, here goes. If it's not, well, it's only taken a couple of minutes to post! : if the writer has used a bibliography referencing management tool, the slightest change in the biography will throw the entry off synch. You probably know about these (e.g. Zotero). As sources are collected, the writer reference them automatically or manually, sometimes using a mix of both. In any event, he will create a databank of sources. When the sources are cited in-text or footnoted, then having selected a particular reference style, a couple of clicks on the keyboard are all that is required for the bibliography to write itself. Any modifications have to be made in the reference management tool and then the document updated. If changes are made in the document, the tool will no into "what's this about" mode?)!
