Oracle:

http://www.knowledge.ru/books/Intellektbase2/index.htm

http://www.knowledge.ru/test_trans.htm

Unsophisticated transaction mechanism of the local RDBMSs is a potential source of errors for both simultaneous updates of the same record and transaction set rollback when some of the transactions were successful but some failed. Both of the above can break database referential and conceptual integrity.

---------------

2. что такое transaction set rollback? откат - rollback или transaction

rollback, реализация его будет соответственно implementation of the transaction

rollback [mechanism].

integrity.

\"Semantic integrity\" perfectly fits the context you refer to, while in the text offered they are actually talking about physical data consistency. So it\'s not at the level of logical data model but at the level of the physical implementation of this logical data model. Using \"sematic integrity\" would not be correct here. Because it\'s about physical data consistency (data itself) and referential integrity of the physical data (table relationships,etc.).

Look at the final translation below and you will see what I mean:

Lack of transaction mechanism of the local RDBMS is a potential source of errors for both concurrent modifications of the same record and transaction rollback where some of the modifications were successful but some failed. This may impact referential integrity of database and data consistency.

-------->>>>Information in an information system should be preserved in a consistent state, that is, should satisfy some well-defined semantic integrity constraints (a.k.a. invariants). In realization terms, we say that the invariants should be preserved outside of a transaction because within a transaction, after it started but before it finished, data is often in anything but a consistent state. In database terms, some of these invariants are formulated as referential integrity constraints, and some are formulated using (for example) assertions if the database management system supports them; otherwise this integrity preservation is to be done in application programs.

Look at the final translation below and you will see what I mean:

Lack of transaction mechanism of the local RDBMS is a potential source of errors for both

concurrent modifications of the same record and transaction rollback where some of the

modifications were successful but some failed. This may impact referential integrity of

database and data consistency.\"

----->>>Of course, if only some modifications of a transaction were successful then the transaction neither finished successfully nor was rolled back successfully. This \"intermediate\" state of the data is a realization of a semantically inconsistent state of information, that is, of information that does not satisfy the integrity invariants. (Therefore a so called compensating transaction may be necessary to restore the semantic integrity.)

Similarly, when we discuss databases we usually do not look at the file system(s) that support these databases, although ultimately semantic integrity is violated when the underlying structure of the files in the file systems becomes broken.

They are not talking at the level of the file system here and this is not what I meant either. I was talking about there is a logical layer (data model level) of the system and there is a physical layer (implementation of that data model = physical data managed by RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). \"Semantic integrity of the data model is violated\" means that either data is inconsistent or referential integrity of the data is violated.

An incorrect value of an attribute may lead to violation both of referential integrity, e.g., a foreign key points to something which is not a primary key, and of more general semantic integrity constraints (formulated as assertions), e.g., some formula which has to be valid for internally consistent data in the database is not valid anymore. As a real-life example, the total amount of money in the client\'s numerous bank accounts is not equal to the sum of the amounts in each account because one account was \"lost\".

So IMHO the authors _may_ refer to situations in which both referential integrity and \"other\" semantic integrity are violated. At the same time, you are right in not liking the original sentence because semantic integrity is a concept at a higher abstraction level than referential integrity. Semantic integrity is supported (realized) by means of supporting referential integrity and other \"data consistency\", the latter mostly in application programs.

Получив перевод, они мне ответили, что a panel of natives will review the translation.
