Upgrading from Trados 3

Dear colleagues,

Is there any experienced Trados user who can inform me on the requierements for upgrading from Freelance Edition 3 on the following issues:
1- Will I need a new dongle?
2- What Windows operating system is best supported: XP or 98?
3- If any hardware is necessary, how long would it take to get properly installed and working? I'm afraid the project is nearly starting and my Trados version only supports RTF-files.

Not necessarily. You can run Trados 6.5 on a parallel dongle, but you might want to take this opportunity to swap that into a newer USB dongle.

2- What Windows operating system is best supported: XP or 98?

I would definitely go for WinXP - I'm using Win2k myself, having given up on 95/98 long ago.

3- If any hardware is necessary, how long would it take to get properly installed and working?

Not sure what you're thinking of here - the only issue I could think of is RAM: 256MB is about the minimum (I use 1GB myself).

I'm afraid the project is nearly starting and my Trados version only supports RTF-files.

Although it's been some time that I was using T3, it did support more file formats than that...IIRC T3 featured the first version of TagEditor. What file format will you need to be working on?

I remember that when trying to use Trados it never supported .doc; so I wonder if my version is not even older than 3 (Nov 99).
In such case, will it be updating or simply buying the whole lot again?
My question on the time to install was rather how long it takes Trados to get any necessary hardware onto my site, and if anybody had experienced problems with that.

This may have been the case with Workbench 1.x - I started with WB 2.x back in 1997/8, and it certainly supported .doc files back then.

In such case, will it be updating or simply buying the whole lot again?

Have a look at TranslationZone - reduced upgrades are available for T3 or earlier versions.

My question on the time to install was rather how long it takes Trados to get any necessary hardware onto my site, and if anybody had experienced problems with that.

Assuming that you will need a new dongle, this should be a matter of a few days. AFAIK Freelance versions are shipped from Ireland, so allow a week to be on the safe side.
