Normal.dot May 31, 2004

It is sometimes helpfull.

Just delete it.

Maybe conflicts with other templates like Duden, Dragon, etc.?

My 2 cents

Toledo

Renaming normal.dot rather than deleting it May 31, 2004

It's true that a corrupt normal.dot template can create various problems. However, as normal.dot holds user-defined settings, it's better to rename it (e.g. to normal_old.dot) rather than just deleting it. In this way it will still be possible to retrieve such settings, such as AutoText entries.

Don't delete Normal.dot May 31, 2004

but rename it to Normal.do_ or similar - this may indeed be a kind of help, but not very likely, as it is a clean new installation. But renaming Normal.dot lets you restore its settings, while after deleting nothing more is possible.

Regards
Jerzy

It is a new installation May 31, 2004

What kind of setting you have if the computer is new and with a new installtion?

Other thing.

Search for ~normal.dot files and delete it (or save it)
and for ~trados and other dot files starting with "~" they are corrupt.,

Never save changes into Trados.dot!

Spellcheck doesn't work, but the thesaurus does.... May 31, 2004

Now here's a funny thing.... The story so far:

German spellcheck: works just fine

Text marked as being: English USA

English spellcheck: doesn't work

BUT....

English thesaurus: works, correctly identifies language variant and spelling errors.

Right now I can still spellcheck the files (very indirectly) using my old computer (which is networked with the new laptop), but that's a very long way round to do a simple spellcheck.

Thanks for all your help!

Support Request to Trados May 31, 2004

Hi Alison,

I've submitted a support request to Microsoft (and the MVPs).

Submit a Support Request to Trados in Stuttgart, too - I'll alert them to this thread.

Cheers, Ralf

spellcheck dll´s from your old PC to the new laptop, making a backup of the new installed ones prior to doing so (it is simply enough to delete them - they are in a bin, it is the same, as would you have copied them elswhere on your PC, unless you do emty your bin immediately or press SHIFT+DEL, wchich deletes the files permanently - at least for usuall tools).
Sometimes such nasty tricks do work.

The mentioned dll´s are located in:
...\\Programme\\Gemeinsame Dateien\\Microsoft Shared\\Proof...

I would simply try to rename this folder in your new PC to ie Proof_test and then copy the whole Proof folder from the old one at the same place.

Do you know where your pesonal auto corrections and spellchecker-files are? This just for the case, you don´t - let me know, as it is possible to migrate them from one PC to another. With XP you do this with a smart creator from MS, but I don´t remember, if Office 2k has had such one.

nitty gritty stuff.... May 31, 2004

Things are getting wierd here....

So I went looking for normal.dot - and couldn't find it.

So I went into Word and tried to create a new template so I would know what the directory path is.

I created a template called "Vorlage2.dot" and saved it in the place where my computer told me that templates are supposed to go. Turned out to be right beside "normal.dot" - which should be at:

c:/dokumenteundeinstellungen/alison/anwenderdaten/microsoft/vor

So I went looking in Explorer for Vorlage 2.

I got as far as

C:/dokumenteundeinstellungen/alison

and then things got strange.

Instead of anwenderdaten I had application data. Fine, so I looked there. And sure enough there was a directory called Microsoft, but all it had in it was a file called MSComctlLib.exd

I then tried searching for Vorlage2.dot (the file I'd just created), but my computer can't find it....

What's going on?

Why can life never be easy...

Hi Alison,

This may sound really stupid but did you instal the English DLLs on your new computer? I am assuming that your Word 2000 version is in German.

Thanks Marijke - done there, been that. I've even just copied my old DLLs over from my old computer - but still no joy.
