Just wanted to share this with you (and drag you with me) to the Stumbleupon tool, an addictive add-on which I stumbled upon a couple of days ago. You can add it on your Mozilla or Explorer browsers, customise it to specify the topics you're interested in (I specified Linguistics, Internet Tools and Computer Graphics), then whenever you feel like it, you click on one of the toolbar buttons and it opens a website on any of your topics which was recommended by other users. I've been delighted so far!

Here are some of the websites I've come across while stumbling:

The Metaglossary http://www.metaglossary.com/ A great search engine which only finds definitions of terms. Not only that, but it lists related keywords and divides search results by the specific meaning of the word. Much more sophisticated than the "define" feature on Google.

The Speech Accent Archive: http://accent.gmu.edu/ Recordings of people from all over the world reading the same English language passage.

http://www.etymologic.com/index.cgi An Etymology game

Unwords http://www.unwords.com/ Make up your own English words for ideas that are hard to express, and share them with the world...

Unusual words http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/gswithenbank/unuwords.htm Some very unusual words in the English language.

Written sound http://www.writtensound.com/alphabetical_af.htm A glossary of words like uggh and humph.

Enough, now back to work!

it actually saves me time Nov 11, 2008

It's an excellent tool - I disable the toolbar when I need to work so I'm not tempted to click the button "just once". It has saved me time since I used to like TV channel hopping and would end up watching some silly show that I am not even that interested in. Set it to video mode and you'll see the best youtube/vimeo/myspace etc. videos tailored to your interests. Set it to video mode and you'll see the best youtube/vimeo/myspace etc. videos tailored to your interests. Since they are usually only a couple of minutes long you can watch it to relax for a few minutes and feel energised from learning something interesting etc. (instead of getting sucked into some TV show with no value whatsoever) Now when I want to relax and just unwind with something random it provides me with excellent videos that I never would have found otherwise
Make sure to add your own content if you come across an interesting article on a blog etc. I added a video I made about tips for squeezing everything you want into handluggage, and according to my site stats a lot of the traffic for that particular video comes from stumbleupon

Great fun tool! Jan 24, 2010

I actually stumbled upon it while interpreting for an interview. The person being interviewed was being asked about the new technologies he used and how to keep it fun, and he talked about the site. I actually came home to try it and absolutely loved it! I made it so I could also find weird and unusual things, so since then I've seen some bizarre stuff, always really funny and light, which is great to unwind. I also chose the books category and found some really good websites with free audio books such as http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/9P0doT/www.freeclassicaudiobooks.com/

Maybe one of the best aps I've seen around!
