Looking for a spelling and grammar check for Mac Thread poster: Jennifer Barnett

It seems that the Spelling and Grammar check in Word 12.3.5 for Mac is less efficient than previous versions; it misses a lot and also quite randomly. Perhaps I am the problem. In any case, this is a good opportunity to explore options. What is a good spelling and grammar check for Mac OS? Any suggestions and experiences would be greatly appreciated. | | | Egils Grikis United Kingdom Local time: 03:34 Russian to Latvian + ... Have you tried Microsoft Office 2011? | Dec 8, 2012 |

Quite a lot of bugs are known for MS Word 2008 for Mac, and it would be advisable to upgrade to the 2011 version. That being said, sorry if this sounds stupid, but - are you positive you've chosen all the appropriate settings (from Word's Preferences pane)? | | | Jennifer Barnett France Local time: 04:34 Member (2009) Dutch to English + ... Thank you, Juliette. I certainly did check all the settings. As for MS Word 2011, I did not update to that immediately as various Mac forums revealed that many users thought 2008 was better in various aspects. In any case, going for a more powerful tool seems like a good idea. | |

I take it you are looking for an English spell checker. - OS X uses Hunspell (like many CAT tools, like CafeTran and OmegaT), so you could try Text Edit or Pages - You can download Aspell (http://aspell.net ) - Probably the best alternative: Download one of the open source office suites, OpenOffice (almost discontinued), NeoOffice (Mac-only), and my favourite: LibreOffice. They are free (as in "free beer," and as in "libre"), and Libreoffice allows for use of various spelling and grammar checkers at the same time, including user defined ones. I'm afraid I can't give an advice on the quality of the various alternatives, especially not for English. By the way, I skipped Word:mac 2008 because I heard that it was a step back (no VBA/macros) compared to 2004, but I did buy 2011. Cheers, Hans

Based on my personal experience, the 2011 version is *far* better: improved stability, no more continous crashes; the ones that still persist (which depend on the spell and grammar check - yes) can be easily avoided through the appropriate settings. It still isn't a perfect tool (and probably will never be...), but upgrading would be a good idea IMHO. Thank you all for your input so far. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5 and yes, I am looking for an English spelling and grammar checker, i.e., it must do both spelling and grammar. Already have OmegaT and OpenOffice but assumed that these spelling/grammar checks would not be as good as Word, simply because they are free. Please correct me if your experience differs and, most importantly, you are able to make the comparison through your direct experience with both. ... See more Thank you all for your input so far. Purchasing good software is not a problem as I am prepared to pay for quality and reliability, but, as usual, not all suitable software is available in Mac versions.

@ Juliette Thanks for the suggestions but I had already found most. Liked the sound of Ultralingua one but it has no GB English option. One of them had a spelling mistake in the product description! @ Skallagromson I'd rather not because I want to keep things as simple as possible. Looks like an update to Office 2011 is the best bet for the time being. Thank you all for the input.
