Norwegian to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general)
Norwegian term or phrase: folkesykdom
Here's a case where more is definitely less, in the sense that more research has led to less certainty.

Some sources (including Ordnett.no) indicate "widespread disease" for "folkesykdom". However, Avdeling for folkesykdommer (part of Folkehelseinstituttet) calls itself "Department of Chronic Diseases". And I find at another source: "LAVT STOFFSKIFTE (hypotyreose) er en utbredt folkesykdom." This would indicate it's not "widespread", as that would be redundant in a phrase with "utbredt".

Please supply reference(s) for your answer.

widespread disease(s)

Explanation:
This gives about 300 000 hits on google.
Funny enough, one can also translate this literally as "public disease(s)":
such as asthma, alcoholism, diabetes, dislexia...
folkesykdom means diseases that are common, epidemic or prevailing among a society.
I think epidemic (epidemi/epidemisk) is a specific disease crisis, spread throughout a population at a given time.

disagree  Donna Stevens: Bipolar disorder is a chronic disease, but it is not what you would call a common illness, such as the common cold.

  -> The recent medical research is identifying more and more cases of bipolar condition. From that point of view it is becoming more common.

chronic disease

Explanation:
In the field of public health, there are two categories of disease that are of particular interest: chronic diseases and communicable diseases. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, asthma, are not transmittable. Communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, pertussis, are transmittable through various means. So if you are speaking of hypotyreose, then the correct term is chronic disease. If you are referring to TB, then it would be communicable disease.

Example sentence(s):
  • Asthma is a widespread chronic disease that is present in all age groups throughout the world.
