produktionsbortfall vs. produktionsförlust

The client has confirmed that the bortfall is a drop in the rate of production and the material produced, while the förlust is the financial loss in production.

The client has approved the translation as loss of production vs. production losses.

As förlust is often used for financial loss, I have a sneaky feeling that we are talking about production figures (1st term) v profits (or losses in this case) generated by the production line

Then we could even have situations where production is up but profits are down and vice versa (although harder to imagine)

But this needs the confirmation of a Swedish colleague that this interpretation is even possible

And sometimes the usage I see in Swe seems to overlap. I have one reference for 'förlust' that talks about maskin 'haveri' and another that discusses 'bortfall' in much the same way as the ABB doc I referenced earlier.

The context is an arbitration between insurer and policyholder regarding compensation for damages caused by flooding at a facility causing both a "produktionsbortfall" AND a "produktionsförlust". Where I had assumed the two were being used interchangeably, I have now reached a separate section for each, but there is nothing in either of the two short sections to explain what either are exactly.

That seems to be something bigger than this -- drop in production (bortfall) = speed loss; production loss = downtime loss (förlust) -- what is you context? A lawsuit for losses caused by?

Do you think "production deficit" could be a suitable term? I.e., not a loss in production, rather a deficit compared to what was planned?
