Norwegian term or phrase: leigebas
"Mange av dei som seinare vart snurpebåtreiarar, var i første del av mellomkrigstida leigebasar på fiskedampskip eigd av byborgarane."

So some kind of boss/vessel captain, but I need an English equivalent that describes this person's relationship with the vessel owner. "Hired captain" reminds me of Mencken's advice:

"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong."
