the devil and the deep blue sea Explanation: In Scandinavia we say, "it's a choice between plage or cholera" when we mean that something is going to turn out bad whatever you do. if that is appropriate in your text, which I am unable to detect from the context quoted, the English equivalent is "between the devil and the deep blue sea".
