depth sounder Explanation: I think the first term refers to the sounder, the way it is pronounced in Arabic. Still can't find any reference to the second term in English. http://www.google.com.eg/search?q=depth sounder&rls=com.micr... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2011-05-30 22:14:31 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Lead line / sounding pole Early hydrographic surveys consisted of depths measured by sounding pole and hand lead line with positions determined by three-point sextant fixes to mapped reference points. Lead lines were ropes, or lines, with depth-markings and lead-weights attached that were lowered and read manually. Lead lines and sounding poles were a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. While the initial depth soundings may have been accurate, they were limited in number, and thus, coverage between single soundings was lacking. http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/hsd/hydro_history.html I browsed many relevant sites but couldn't find any term that sounds even remotely close to the Arabic term اسكنديل |
