روى البخاري قائلا حدثنا الحميدي عبد الله بن الزبير قال حدثنا سفيان قال حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد الأنصاري قال أخبرني محمد بن إبراهيم التيمي أنه سمع علقمة بن وقاص الليثي يقول سمعت عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه على المنبر قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى...)

فسلسلة الرواة هذه هي السند ويهتم بها علماء الشريعة من حديث وتفسير وفقه إلخ لأن كل راوي له سيرة ذاتية وتقييم في كتب الرجال والطبقات حيث يحكم عليه من حيث المصداقية والعدل والضبط وهل كان ينسى أم لا وهل كان يكذب أم لا وفق عدة معايير، فإذا كان أخفق أحد هؤلاء الرواة أو رجال الإسناد في تحقيق شروط وعايير الضبط والعدل إلخ تقل درجة الحديث ويضعف بحسب المشكلة التي في الراوي، فعلى سبيل المثال إن كان كاذبا يحكم على الحديث بأنه "موضوع" أي مكذوب ومختلق ومفبرك ولا يصح إسناده أو نسبته إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
