Directorate (or Bureau or Central Office) of National Data Explanation: Mudiriyate = Directorate (or Bureau or Central Office) of National Census Registration Data Close effective equivalent term would be somewhat akin to: (US) Bureau of the Census but with additional authority to record and issue national ID/personal status cards, as was the case in Iraq during Saddam's regime. Hope this helps. Khair, in shaa' Allah. Regards, Stephen H. Translating many Iraqi official documents since 1991. |

Public Department of Census Explanation: Not wanting to disagree with Sheikh Stephen, I found this bit in a Human Rights Watch publication regarding Kirkuk: "Karim told Human Rights Watch that documents in PUK custody pertaining to Arabization had been seized in Kirkuk, including from the crucial Census Department (Da’irat al-Nufus) and the Housing Department (Da’irat al-Iskan). " So "nifus" seems to be related to "souls" (i.e. people) and counting thereof. Wa Allahu a'alam. Also, look at the publisher on this Iraqi Census book: http://www.worldcatlibraries.org/wcpa/servlet/DetailDisplay?... |
