Боята обикновено се нанася с четка, но може да се ползват и други предмети, например цветен молив. Принципно живописта се изгражда на основата на баланса между топли и студени тонове. Изразните ѝ средства са маската, цветното петно, фактурата на живописния слой. От първостепенно значение за нея е колоритът. Като всяко друго изкуство, тя може да изпълнява познавателна, естетическа, идеологическа, възпитателна, документална и други функции. Рисунките могат да бъдат натуралистични, фотографски, абстрактни, да бъдат натоварени със съдържание, символика, емоция или да имат политически характер.
