«[…] formant un organisme nou, un Institut de Ciències que, col•locat en ***unitat conjunta*** amb les actuals seccions historicoarqueològiques i aprofitant alguns dels mitjans i pràctiques ja reunits i utilitzats per aquest, el completés en ***l’ordre científic***, donant-li la complexitat indispensable a una entitat pública que no vulgui donar preponderància ***viciosa*** a una de les branques del saber humà, en perjudici de les altres.»

“(...) by creating a new body, the Science Institute, which, placed on the same level as the existing history and archaeological sections and taking advantage of some of the methods and practices already developed and used therein, will complement the latter in science terms, thereby equipping with the necessary complexity a public body+++ that has no desire to grant preponderance to one branch of human knowledge over another.”

+++ This public body is the Institute d'Estudis Catalans, which has/had three sub-sections: Science, History+Archaeology, and Lang+Lit. This paragraph refers to the Science section, at the time when it was created.

This isn't a term or two, I know, it's the entire paragraph, but noone has to actually go off and do research.

All I wd like is a second opinion on interpretation, and especially on the items in ***.

There are a number of issues to be borne in mind:

1. the text dates from 1911, so the language has to reflect that
2. it has to be absolutely as literal as possible

Hello Lia,
I would translate "col•locat en unitat conjunta amb..." as "co-located as a joint facility OR in joint premises with..." and would stick to a literal translation of "l'ordre científic" as "the scientific order", as that is a recognised term. I´d go for "(a) distorted (degree of) priority" for "preponderància viciosa". If you want to keep it as literal as possible, would "a Science Insitute" for "un Institut de Ciències" fit in the overall context? Otherwise it looks good to me! Hope that helps. Besniku.

I would translate "col•locat en unitat conjunta amb..." as "co-located as a joint facility OR in joint premises with..." and would stick to a literal translation of "l'ordre científic" as "the scientific order", as that is a recognised term. Here is my take on that paragraph with the most important variant marked by asterix:

“(...) by creating a new body, the Science Institute, which, ***located in the same shared building*** as the existing history and archaeological sections and taking advantage of some of the methods and practices already developed and used therein, will complement the latter within the scientific area by offering an indispensable intricacy to a public body with no desire to seek the preponderance of one branch of human knowledge over another.”

Though the original is well overwritten... Good luck with it...
