I imagine it refers to Catalan politics, history and Catalonia as a nation but can't quite think of an adequate way of translating it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

An option. I know exactly what you mean, but I think "Catalanism" "Catalan Nationalism" OR "Struggle" is too specific and strong. I would opt for this

What about simply saying Catalan socio-historic and cultural identity? I know it´s a tad longwinded, but if you look below you will see that the \"fet\" comprises all things Català

I rather like Catalan socio-historic and cultural identity, it seems to cover the idea very well. Many thanks for the input.

Explanation:
"El fet català" is the title of a book and a political statement. For those who believe in the Catalan cause, no hay "un asunto catalán" sino "un hecho catalán". Catalunya = undeniable fact.

the Catalan issue/question

Explanation:
