English translation:没有因果关系
Explanation:
Mt Kenya is one of the world's most striking locations. For decades this ancient volcano has been the destination that holidaymakers dream of.

地理位置得天独厚。作为长久沉积的火山主峰,肯尼亚山数十年来,一直是观光胜地。

“作为”的解释有很多,不能单一把它翻译成"As",要了解原文的逻辑关系。更重要的是,这个原文是观光旅游行业的广告,并非地质学课本!

As a major stratovolcano, or composite volcano

Explanation:
听说肯尼亚山是层状火山,that is, stratovolcano or composite volcano.
虽然层状火山不是这句的翻译,我想有意思

我翻译这句的''主峰' as 'some highest and famous mountain among Africa etc'in above explanation.
I think it was not match for 语法 exactly, and if so, more literal translation is
'Because of its major peak as a stratovolcano, or composite volcano,'

As the main peak of a long-extinct volcano

Explanation:
IMO, this is what it is saying:
As the main peak of a long-extinct volcano, Mount Kenya has been a popular tourist destination for decades.
长久沉积的火山:long-extinct volcano
Mount Kenya is indeed a long-extinct volcano.

http://www.kenya-advisor.com/mt-kenya.html
"History of Mt Kenya

Mount Kenya is a long-extinct volcano that has a number of separate peaks, as well as glacial ice. All its three peaks (Batian, Nelion and Lenana) were named after local Masai tribesmen. Mt Kenya was first spotted by a European in 1849 when missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf reported it. It was another 50 years before anyone made it to the top. Today, thousands of tourists come to the park to make the climb."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Kenya
There are also many info in this article that says it is long-extinct.

Hi Phil, in my short time on the site, I have noticed that you are one of the most knowledgeable posters in the Kudoz section (that Easbo pepper salt catch was great). However, I disagree with your contention that 作为 cannot be translated as "As" here. Actually, I agree with your critique of my post, though I think that "As" should be used here to signify "in the role/capacity of..." as Sharon has translated it. I'm fairly confident that it can be used in that fashion as the three dictionaries I consulted all included a definition of 作为 that used the word "as" in this manner.

I personally think causality is implied here because the fact that it is an ancient volcano is clearly the reason tourists visit. However, grammatically it should probably be translated as Sharon has. And this is also why I think your translation is lacking. You have actually removed this bit of grammar and changed the sentence from, "As an ancient volcano, it has been..." to simply "it has been." In fact, in your insistence that it not be translated as "as," you seem to have ignored the grammar of the opening phrase to fit the spirit of the sentence much as I have.

Anyway, thanks for the comment.

Cheers,

Chris

disagree  Phil Hand: Sorry to pick you out, Chris, your answer is the best here, but as English speakers, our role is to try to inject a bit of sense. There's no causal relationship, and your sentence creates one. 作为 has a variety of uses.
