Thank you very much Gertrude for the help. I have to believe the source text could have been written with better clarity, but as it is now, I think Shirley and Xiaoyan's interpretation is more likely what the author meant to say. I translated that way. Thank you all for the helpful discussion!

neutral  xiaoyanchen: If you read the sentences given in the first two links, you will see there is a previous assumption before the adjective "assumed" is used. I am not sure whether the asker's sentence has the same type of context.
