Basically, it is instructing the audience on how to both work toward "enlightenment," or be "enlightened," and also still deal with the profane world. A boddhisatva primer, so to speak. I wouldn't use "detached," though that is a common Buddhist term in English that would seem to mirror 出世. I am not convinced that this appropriately describes the Buddhist perspective on enlightenment and the Buddhist's relationship with the world.
