- POGONSKE mašine pretvaraju neku energiju (npr. kinetička energija vode, toplotna energija vodene pare ili gasa, električna i si.) u mehaničku energiju neophodnu za izvršenje korisnog rada.
- RADNE mašine izvršavaju neku korisnu funkciju i tako čovjeku olakšavaju rad (dizalice, pumpe, miješalice, strugovi, bušilice, transportne mašine, rudarske mašine...)
