agree  Pavle Perencevic: It's "area" all right. Vojna enciklopedija also says so. In the military context, "rejon" has to do with operations, and "okrug" with administration. If you're already using "area" for područje, you will do fine if you use "sector" or "zone" for "rajon".

In these senses the term is almost always translated as "district".
