The Water Bearer’s Role in the Liturgy

Arrive at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to the service in which you are participating (Sunday morning, Funeral, or Memorial) in order to put on vestments and orient yourself.

Your regular vestments will consist of:

1. Alb - the white robe

2. Cincture - a colored rope used as a belt

3. Bering Cross – a cross hung around the neck on a ribbon the same color as the liturgical colors used on the altar.

Note: while the crosses are normally on the correct color ribbons, it is your responsibility to make sure that it is the same color as the paraments.

Procession
Follow at the end of the procession (typically the clergy) holding the water pitcher just above waist level until you reach the center front of the Sanctuary. Then step up onto the first step; turn left in front of the altar (behind the altar rail) and place the pitcher of water on the bapistry table. Then stand in front of your chair (the chair on the lower level next to the bapistry) and follow the service in the bulletin and hymnals provided.

Peace
Exchange the Peace with the others participating in the service and resume your seat.

Communion

You will typically serve communion. Follow the directions given under Serving Communion.

Recession

Wait to follow at the end of the procession.

Do Not Remove the Water Pitcher.

Upon reaching the Narthex, return to the lay vestry and re-hang your robe.
