Czech term or phrase: detektivem na zkoušku
jde o týmovou soutěž dětí s názvem "Detektivem na zkoušku", tj. vyzkouší si na jedno odpoledne detektivní postupy. Ráda bych se vyhnula spojením "on trial" či "on probation" - překlad by neměl evokovat soudní proces s detektivem.

Detective for a Day

Explanation:
"for a day" is what springs to mind (perhaps even "for an afternoon", but it doesn't have the same ring to it).

Notes to answerer
Asker: I like your suggestion. Unfortunately I have just learnt that it is a few days' competition - my mistake. Any other idea? :)

agree  Anton Konashenok: I like this one! Doesn't matter if it's "for a day" or "for a week" or whatever.

agree  Lenka Červená: Like this one as well..how strange would "for a time" sound?

agree  Pavel Prudký: ...pointu to neztrácí ani na více dní, případně bych dal "for a while"

agree  Roni_S: I also think this works even if the competition is for more than one day. Sounds best too. Roni
