Czech term or phrase: pleťáky
Artist is speaking about what his mother did for work - probably just after WWI. Knit slippers?

Matka šla do fabriky. Navrhovala alespoň boty, pleťáky, které se exportovaly do Ameriky, a protože byla krásná, tak je i předváděla.

Sandals with straw platform soles

Explanation:
Doesn't seem to be an established term, Liz..

My guess is they are either (women high(er) heel) sandals made of woven straw, like a Chinese straw hat material (flat) used to make a shoe, NOT like Japanese straw sandals, OR

Sandals on platform soles made of straw, this seems the most likely case if we're talking late 60's, see link, OR

Canvas shoes, like Keds, but we'd call those 'kecky' and they wouldn't be subject to much catwalking...

canvas espadrilles/shoes

Explanation:
I personally remember 'plaťáky' (back in early 90s) looking as canvas espadrilles on the link below. Back then, just after WWI, it could be any type of canvas shoes though. IMO.

Or "canvas footwear". I would think something with 'canvas'.
