Danish term or phrase: overhøring
In an article concerning the Danish school system following the Education Act of 1814: "Disciplinen var streng og straffene ofte hårde og korporlige. Pædagogisk var der tale om udenadslære, overhøring og elevernes indbyrdes undervisning som supplement til den ene lærer, der ofte stod med 30 elever eller flere. Effekt havde undervisningen dog. Man regner med, at stort set hele befolkningen i kongeriget Danmark kunne læse i 1830’erne." Apparently, due to the student:teacher ratio, it was necessary to incorporate additional learning techniques, including rote learning, "overhøring," and the students' own mutual instruction.

the Socratic method

Explanation:
"the Socratic method" is what this appears to mean.

If expressing it in this pedagogical terminology is appropriate here, is another matter. It could be expressed as "elenctic method"
