without dividing the estate with joint heirs Explanation: In Scandinavian countries the surviving spouse can elect what is called an "uskiftet bo" or "undivided estate" in English which means that the surviving spouse can keep the estate undivided for the remainder of his or her lifetime. Note that this only applies to jointly held property ("fælleseje") and not property that the deceased spouse owned separately ("særeje"). The link discusses in very general terms some of the rules that govern this area of law.
