Danish term or phrase: sygehus
Hi everyone,

Here is an interesting question (I hope): I am looking at Danish tax law right now, and for some reason this document seems to makes a distinction between "hospitaler" and "sygehuse". Here is the full sentence:

Skoler, hospitaler, sygehuse, statsanerkendte rekonvalescenthjem, døgninstitutioner for børn og unge og offentligt godkendte opholdssteder for børn og unge, biblioteker under offentligt tilsyn og offentligt tilgængelige museer, alt for så vidt de er selvejende institutioner, og indtægterne udelukkende kan anvendes til den pågældende institutions formål.

Does anyone have any idea why they make that distinction? If so, how does one make the distinction in the translated document.

clinic
Explanation:
Normally one would translate "sygehus" with "hospital", but in your context "clinic" fits better.
The difference between the meaning of the Danish words "hospital" and "sygehus" is minute: "Hospitaler" do, per definition, provide inpatient facilities for the 24-hour care; "sygehuser" may, or may not, provide such care.
Thus: "hospitaler, sygehus, ..." > "hospitals, clinics, ..."

For this very reason one defines a \"hospice\" as a \"terminalhospital\", not as a \"terminalsygehus\". See BLANGSTED\'s answer!

hospital

Explanation:
Hi Christian. The Danes I asked say there is no difference. MAYBE (only maybe) one thinks of a hospital as being a little bigger. In my Nudansk Ordbog, the first and only definition they give of hospital is sygehus... Do they call Rigshospitalet a "hospital" because the word is deemed more elegant (from French)and it is the nation's main hospital?? Skejby Sygehus is about as big, but it is a sygehus...

I think they differentiate, just because some are called sygehus and others are called hospital.

Clinic er oversat til klinik og i den danske medicinske ordbog betyder \"An outpatient or ambulatory care facility, often located at a hospital\". Derfor mener jeg det ikke er det samme som hospital eller sygehus. Hospice er\"a facility that provices palliative and supportive car for terminally ill patients\".
