Thanks, Charlotte! By the way, the end client also said it could be left as DlSØ number - presumably because it was familiar to the client - but I did write the English explanation as a TN in the end as well.

Thanks, Charlotte! By the way, the end client also said it could be left as DlSØ number - presumably because it was familiar to the client - but I did write the English explanation as a TN in the end as well.

  -> Why don't you submit your own response to the question? A brand name or abbreviation should not be translated even if it means using source language vowels!

agree  Pernille Chapman: Standard procedure would be to keep the abbreviation: "(so-called) DISØ number", followed by an explanation in English if you like. E.g. Charlotte's perfectly good suggestion, "Record Library Search Number".

disagree  Pernille Chapman: I fail to see how this would convey the correct meaning to the English reader.

  -> When a synonym is given, it is common practice in the translation to enter what the synonym stands for, i.e. DIS number would be "Discoteque search number"
disagree  Mats Wiman: With your logic the name François could not be used in an English text because the French letter 'ç' is no letter in the English Language. What about København?? Not allowed or what? DISØ is a Danish acronym, not an English one.
