Dutch term or phrase: bewerp
This is a historic term for the first version of a painting to show the patron, like a draft. The patron would make comments and changes could be made before finishing the work or painting it for real (a 'bewerp' could also just be a drawing).

Does anyone know if there is a specialised term for this in English? It may just be 'draft', which we're inclined to use, but if there is anything more specialised, we'd like to know.
