These are sensors on a conveyor that indicate the presence of a load. So when they don't, they are 'vrij'...

How to say this in English?!

All that is relevant is whether there was further confusion with respect to your translation job.

Of course, if you wanted, you could always add confusion to confusion and moving farther and farther away from the solution. :-)

What is a 'passive sensor' supposed to describe?

Wouldn't active/inactive sensors form a more harmonious couple?

I do think active = niet vrij/inactive = vrij are simple words as well for that matter.

You should not confuse, as I did, switched on/switched off with active/inactive.

They may be switched on and still be inactive.

I can understand, however, the idea of:

they are called active when they detect something
they are called inactive when they no longer/don't detect something

I just wondered why there is a simple word in Dutch, and wondered what the terminology was in English. I tend to agree with your first point, which I think you edited, that sensors are always active when they are on...

basically, from a linguistic point of view, if this was a question, 'vrij zijn' means being free of loads, in the sense of getting no input, nothing being in front of them, nothing passing them, having an unobstructed view, not getting loaded with loads, ready for action but inactive. :-)

I see Dave's point.

they are called active when they detect something
they are called inactive when they no longer/don't detect something

so this would be an option as well

and possibly more jargon-like
