I am translating a birth certificate from Surinam, which carries a legalisation stamp (apostille) on the back. This needs to be translated too.

In essence this stamp certifies that the certificate is legal.

It has 10 numbered parts to it.
Part number 8 is the following:

Assuming No. means number, and the xxx is a four digit number, can anyone help me with what this phrase stands for please, specifically G.and (u).

The question is what means 'G.' and what means '(u)'.

I agree it would be the number of the apostille, the similarity is unmistakable.

The document states that part 8 is the number of the apostille which must be unique for the country. How it is generated is up to the country concerned but it remains just the number of the apostille, no more no less
