'return on investment (ROI)' = 'rendement op investeringen':

'An investment criterion used to measure either a project's PROFITABILITY or the profit-generating performance of a company or division. The return on investment of a project is the ratio of the NET PROFIT to be generated by the project to the investment in ASSETS that is required. The return on investment of a company can be calculated in different ways, but the most common are to establish the ratio of net profit to EQUITY (or RETURN ON EQUITY) or the ratio of net profit plus interest divided by total assets (or RETURN ON ASSETS).'

'A quick and ready method of appraising (see APPRAISAL) proposed capital investments which shows how many years are needed to recover the initial capital outlay. However, the limitation of the payback method is that it does not explicitly take into consideration the TIME VALUE OF MONEY by discounting CASH FLOWS to calculate PRESENT VALUE and so it must be used in conjunction with other appraisal tools, for example, the DISCOUNTED CASH FLOW method, so as to give the most accurate view.'
