  -> Danks!

agree  writeaway: the first (and only) thing that comes to mind. as in 'rasecht'. fwiw, there are other options but they get wordier and this is from a newspaper article apparently so searching further is virtually pointless

  -> Danks!

agree  Bryan Crumpler: Hrrrmmm... needs something though to disambiguate the term "born", which provokes the question "when" or "where", but rarely "how". Perhaps "natural" as a precursor strengthens this (e.g. "natural born politician"). Otherwise: "politician by nature"

neutral  Tina Vonhof (X): I think this is too positive - this guy is obviously a b.....d (clear from the other adjectives used).

die-hard politician

Explanation:
"A totalitarian, power-hungry die-hard politician."

Of eerder de "die-hard" vooraan: "a die-hard totalitarian and power-hungry politician".

"born politician" is natuurlijk oké, maar het klinkt m.i. wat te neutraal of te braaf. Wat hier bedoeld wordt, is dat Erdogan een sluwe polititieke vos is die alle politieke watertjes al doorzwommen heeft. Een politicus in hart en nieren, maar dan in de negatieve zin.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Totally agree re: 'born'. In this case, where the meaning is clearly negative, another more or less negative term is appropriate.

neutral  freekfluweel: gezien de context wellicht meer adequaat. Dient nog wel te worden opgemerkt dat je een "die hard" WORDT, door veel ervaring opgedaan te hebben. Je wordt niet geboren als "die hard" Bovendien "kleurt" dit je vertaling. Lief/meedogenloos: hij flikt het!

dyed-in-the-wool politician

Explanation:
a slightly stronger and more colloquial expression than 'born'.
The expression "dyed in the wool" refers to a state of steadfastness, especially with respect to one's political, religious or social beliefs.

Turkse Erdogan lijkt meer op Poetin dan op Khomeini

De Turkse premier Erdogan wordt door de Turkse oppositie niet meer afgeschilderd als een moslimfanaat die van de seculiere staat een tweede Iran wil maken, maar als een totalitaire, machtswellustige raspoliticus à la Poetin die critici de mond snoert.
