Dutch term or phrase: scherp en inhoudelijjk sterk
Yes, another old chestnut.

I take this to mean that they are well-informed about the developments and generally clued up on what's going on. I've thought of 'which keeps them sharp and on the ball', but I feel they're a bit synonymous. Any suggestions?

keen/astute/on edge and knowledgeable
Explanation:

Yes, keen and knowledgeable. Or, to get away from the 'enthusiastic' meaning of keen, perhaps 'keeps them sharp and knowledgeable'. Thanks.

agree  jarry (X): I like 'knowledgeable' but not the other three suggestions. Especially 'astute' and 'on edge' are not appropriate in this context.
