Dutch term or phrase: jaarbelang
Goedemorgen!

Looking at my last ref:

• the insured turnover of the company can fluctauate by 30% in either direction
• in the event of damage or loss, the insured amount is increased to 130% of the annual total ("het verzekerde jaarbelang")
• from within this increased amount/share "verhoogde belang", the actual damage or loss (werkelijke schade) is then determined
• each year, there is a "naverrekening" based on the actual damage or loss, i.e., adding or subtracting the actual damage/loss amount from the "verzekerde jaarbelang" (annual total)

Note added at 6 hrs (2016-08-09 14:02:17 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

note that, apparently:

increased amount/share "verhoogde belang"

could also be:

decreased amount/share "verlaagde belang"

as turnover might go either up or down

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Michael. With the risk of sounding like a total ignoramus: this is the annual total from the perspective of the insurer rather than the insured?

Asker: I see, useful link - thanks!

neutral  sindy cremer: hm... not convinced. Annual total as in ... what exactly?//hm... there's a lot of 'seems' in this response, and nothing to support your 4-graded answer. I am tempted to give a disagree, because 'annual total' could mean anything.

-> I think my meijerassurantien.nl ref "increase/decrease-clausule" somewhat clarifies what it means. It seems to be a way to calculate how much winst/omzet a company can insure. "belang" seems to synonymous with "omzetbelang".

neutral  Kitty Brussaard: Agree with Sindy that 'annual total' is too vague here. Nevertheless, compliments for the interesting refs :-)

insurable interest matching annual earnings

Explanation:
e.g. extrapolated from gross annual income.

Refer to Michael and Sindy for further refs.

Example sentence(s):
  • Insurance [COM] Full entry NL verzekerbaar belang EN insurable interest
  • The run rate functions as an extrapolation of current financial performance and is based on the assumption that current conditions will continue. Read more: Run Rate Definition | Investopedia http://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/runrate.asp#ixzz4GqcDRqJn

agree  Kitty Brussaard: I think you're definitely on the right track with 'insurable interest' but 'annual earnings' needs to be tweaked a little further as it's not accurate enough. See also the various refs (including the ones I've just posted).

https://www.lindenhaeghe.nl/nieuws/oefenvraag-pe-plus-schade...

http://www.ramsinsurance.nl/publicatie/Bedrijfsschadeverzeke...

agree  Michael Beijer: agree. "annual total" = very vague, although so is "jaarbelang". maybe sth w/ annual + share/proportion/percentage (belang). or sth w/ provisional, as it can change depending on the "naverrekening" based on "werkelijke schade". "provisional annual total"?
12 mins
-> I find that neither suggestion explains what it actually entails. Also, there is nothing 'provisional' in a jaarbelang.

DEFINITION of 'Gross Profits Insurance'

A type of business interruption insurance that provides funds in the amount of profit lost if an insurable event, such as property damage, occurs. Gross profits insurance is most commonly used in the United Kingdom and Canada. This type of insurance differs from gross earnings insurance, which is more commonly found in the United States.
(...)
Gross profit insurance is designed to “bring back” the insured to where it would have been financially assuming the insurable event had not occurred. The amount of loss that a business experiences is calculated based on a pre-defined formula, and typically relies on historical rates of turnover to determine the amount a business is losing. Gross profit is calculated as turnover less purchases and variable costs. The loss formula looks at turnover over a specific period of time, such as twelve months, though extenuating circumstances that have affected turnover during the examination period may need to be smoothed out.
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/g/gross-profits-insurance....

Business interruption losses are less tangible than direct physical losses. In the last issue of Claims Canada, Education Forum featured 10 steps for examining and settling business interruption claims. This article follows up with a more detailed look at Step 8: Calculate the loss.

Framework for calculations

Let’s review the basic framework for calculating losses under the standard Profits and Gross Earnings wordings.

1. Calculate the insurable values (defined gross profit or gross earnings) using the profit and loss statement for the most recent financial year, adjusted to reflect the results that would have been obtained without the insured incident.

Gross profit = net income before taxes plus insured standing charges

Gross earnings = net sales and other earnings derived from operations less the cost of merchandise sold including packaging materials, materials and supplies consumed directly in supplying the service(s) of the insured, and services purchased from outsiders (not employees of the insured) for resale which do not continue under contract

Insurable Interest Non-Marine Insurance
For a contract of insurance to be valid the policyholder must have an interest in the insured item that is recognised at law whereby he benefits from its safety, well being or freedom from liability and would be prejudiced by its damage or the existence of liability. This is called the insurable interest and must exist at the time the policy is taken out and at the time of the loss.

Marine Insurance
Similar to the above, but the insurable interest may change during the term of the policy. e.g. from the seller to the buyer.
http://www.graybrook.co.uk/dist/pdf/glossary-of-common-insur...

What is an 'Insurable Interest'

An insurable interest is a stake in the value of an entity or event for which an insurance policy is purchased to mitigate risk of loss. Insurable interest is a basic requirement for the issuance of an insurance policy, making it legal and valid and protecting against intentionally harmful acts. Entities not subject to financial loss from an event do not have an insurable interest and cannot purchase an insurance policy to cover that event.
