Dutch term or phrase: terugnameplicht
This concerns the statutory obligation to accept returned used items for recycling. Can't find it in Gateway legal lexicon, or on EuroDicAutom. What I'm looking for is a snappy phrase rather than an explanation.

take-back obligation

extended product responsibility (EPR)

FR: obligation de reprise

Terugnameplicht
.

take-back obligations -- legislators will start to make manufacturers liable for the environmental consequences of their products after disposal, e.g. Germany has introduced a take-back obligation for packaging and goods such as television sets, computers and cars;

Thanks to all who replied. This answer came the closest to giving me the 'snappy' phrase that I was looking for (and was the first to do so). Regrettably, in the end, I had to use a more ponderous term because the meaning would otherwise not have been apparent to UK readers. Perhaps it may yet pass into common use in English, so I shall enter it into the glossary.

Explanation:
take back items for recycling the material used to . . .
All those words ending in 'plicht' and 'heid' are very difficult to translate. It does look like you already did a good job with the sentence you came up with yourself!

withrawal and recycling obligations

Explanation:

EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency)site:

The draft regulation sets out a number of "Withdrawal and Recycling Obligations." Withdrawal Obligations included: 1) The automobile producer must take back from the last owner cars of its automobile brand at the end of their useful life, "principally" free of charge. 2) The withdrawal network must be at least in equal density to the sales network and have one withdrawal place or one pick-up system for each area engaged in disposal, even where there are no marketing offices of the automobile brand concerned. Similar requirements apply to producers or sellers of spare and exchange parts, accessories and other parts. The Recycling Obligations require producers and sellers to reuse parts if it is technically possible or to recycle material back into the car. After withdrawal...

withdrawal obligation

Explanation:
Although the context mentions recycling, the term "terugnameplicht" itself does not, so I would not add "and recycling" to this term.

"Take-back obligation" is certainly closer to common usage, but if the context is technical, I would stick to the standard jargon, awkward as it is.
