hmmm don't understand the use of 'ondergrond' here at all... it's also about marketing paint, but isn't about substrates!

neutral  Lianne van de Ven: These are definitely called substrate, referring to the material. Surface would refer to surface properties such as rough, dirty etc.//Well, I have been a professional painter for only 12 years. Wood is colloquial. Substrate is professional.
