Dutch to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Dutch term or phrase:rijwerktuigen
Very few hits for this (singular or plural), so I'm not sure what they are. Belgian company that makes roofs, facades and walls. These are initiatives that have been taken in response to their previous employee satisfaction survey.
Under "Veiligheid en welzijn":
Er werden nieuwe procedures opgesteld voor het betreden van de site X, een externe attestering ingevoerd voor het gebruik van **rijwerktuigen**, de organisatie van veiligheidsdagen voor alle arbeiders en er werd sterk ingezet op risicoanalyses in nauwe betrokkenheid met de werkvloer.

I hesitated whether to close this w/o grading, since we can't be absolutely sure, but Kitty's research is pretty convincing. Not sure it should be added to the glossary though, given the lingering doubts. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and useful contributions. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
1) Does 'rijdende werktuigen' always refer to 'drivable' ? If you look at the word, you would wonder why. If 'rijdende werktuigen' also refers to the 'forklifts / lift trucks' below, then, it would seem to me, 'drivable' as a translation is no option, since these are not 'drivable'.
2) If 'rijdende werktuigen' alsways refer to 'drivable', then does this specific category of drivables also exists abroad? And if it does, then how would you call this specific category?
The forklifts / lift trucks which are designated as 'wheeled equipment' in the first link directly below would also qualify as 'rijdende werktuigen' (and more specifically as 'interntransportmiddelen'), at least so in the Netherlands. See my reference comment.
Basically, under Dutch law, the 'rijdende werktuigen' category of vehicles covers all types of drivable/mobile industrial, agricultural, forestry and engineering/construction equipment which is not primarily designed for transportation of people and/or goods.
Loading and unloading of goods (by lift trucks etc.) is not considered transportation. Also, 'primarily designed for' is considered something different from 'used as/for'.
'wheeled machinery' looks fine to me, but i won't stick it up or the stuck up might shoot it down
it might be what counts as non-road mobile machinery, too...
Non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) is defined as any mobile machine, item of transportable industrial equipment, or vehicle - with or without bodywork - that is:
not intended for carrying passengers or goods on the road installed with a combustion engine - either an internal spark ignition (SI) petrol engine, or a compression ignition diesel engine
If 'engin roulant' was an option and this possible [possible option] then was used in the context concerned, perhaps the reader would gather what kinds of 'engins roulants' were referred to.
Just asked my French-speaking contact for this job and he said he'd probably translate it as 'engin roulant' and thought it probably referred to forklift trucks.
I found 1, which would seem to indicate that these things (at least the ones in this one ref) have engines (thus, "motorised equipment"):
"Bij een hijswerktuig bijvoorbeeld wordt de grootte van de motor voor ongeveer 90% door de zwaartekracht en daarmee door het statisch vermogen bepaald. Bij een rijwerktuig daarentegen wordt de motorgrootte voor 90% door de versnellingskracht en daarmee door het dynamisch vermogen bepaald. [16]"
that's exactly what I had resorted to! But literally a minute after posting the question I received a different version of the source - with no rijwerktuigen in sight! Might have to close w/o grading but we'll see if anyone knows for sure.
maybe use something general like, "mobile/movable equipment"? I think in a safety context such as yours this would be quite a safe solution as it would cover all manner of … mobile equipment.
I think it's probably synonymous with "verplaatsbare/mobiele werktuigen".
Explanation: I assume they mean stuff like movable scaffolds (verplaatsbare steigers), portable cranes (verplaatsbare kranen), etc., so maybe use something general like, "mobile/movable equipment"?
