dividing engine Explanation: They're saying that early (17th century) clockmakers had to cut the wheels by hand and manually plot out the gradations. The dividing engine (particulary circular dividing engines) eliminated the need to do any of that by hand. Look up some history on Henry Hindley and Jesse Ramsden.
