phenomenology Explanation: Often this is translated as 'the phenomenology of'. Please check further on google as I am on replying fro my phone. In your second case 'aspects of being' would be better. The 3rd also phenomenology and check out that phrase of Nagel to read more about it. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2010-10-31 02:23:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Het derde geval kan eigenlijk ook (net als in de eerste variant) geherformuleerd worden als 'bewustzijn als zijnsaspect': "Opmerkelijk is dat ook in de recentere discussies rond het artikel van Thomas Nagel `What is it to be a bat?' het bewustzijn als zijnsaspect sterk naar voren komt: `the fact that an organism has conscious experience at all means, basically, that there is something it is like to be that organism--something that it is like for the organism . We may call this the subjective character of experience.' (166)" In this case I would probably also use 'aspect of being', and maybe, after all, also in the first case. In this type of text the golden rule of '5 lines or sentences of context' needs to be expanded to a couple of pages ;-) |

Being in the world Explanation: It is almost always referred to with the German term 'dasein' or in English as 'being in the world'; in this case 'different ways of being in the world'. Husserl's point is that there is no distinction between our 'self' and the way we experience the world around us, and our consciousness encompasses both at the same time.
