I think the discussion shows that it's most likely that a descriptive translation is necessary. I find yours a good descriptive translation. I give it a 2 because I still think there may be a scientific translation. Thanks Michael.

talking therapy

Explanation:
Ventileren means to get things off your chest, and inzichtgeven means gaining an insight into the problem. I don't think a more literal translation works, so I suggest "talking therapy".

Explanation:
Or just sidestep the problem and translate 'ventilerende/inzichtgevende gesprekken' as 'counselling sessions'. It isn't wrong, technically, and it is basically what you do at a counselling session. Or am I wrong?

supportive conversations

Explanation:
I think I would choose the more conventional "supportive", which normally complements focus on improving understanding or developing insight. Note that I use supportive conversations, not supportive therapy as in flash cards example below. I don't think they mean "ventilating" for acute traumatic events either. Few examples of "ventilerende gesprekken" but given your additional goal info, I'd go with supportive conversations.

http://www.flashcardexchange.com/cards/supportive-and-insigh...

I think there is an undesirable connotation to venting:
http://stuartschneiderman.blogspot.com/2009/05/is-venting-th...

Part of the medical interventions required in each case includes supportive conversations and psycho-education, which serve to stabilize the psyche, adapt to any permanent changes to the body, and reduce anxiety.
http://www.ukb.de/en/main/psychotraumatology.htm

Meer medische context:
The objective is to investigate a rehabilitation program (supportive conversations and a rehabilitation course for cancer patients and their relatives together).

  -> They're still conversations.

neutral  Michael Beijer: I agree with Phil / Hi Lianne. But seeing as how there are so many hits for 'ventilation sessions' on reputable-looking websites why would you need to try and come up with something else? / Don't worry, Lianne, I am having (weekly) therapy too ;)
54 mins
-> There are only 10 "ventilerende gesprekken" on google (11 now) - and look at their context. This does not refer to the famous "talking therapy" originated by Freud. But maybe I am too expert...

Sessions aimed at expressing feelings/emotions

Explanation:
Another option. Since there seems to be no one-on-one, natural sounding English translation for this, perhaps best to use a more descriptive approach:

"Sessions aimed at expressing/ the expression of feelings/emotions and gaining insight into your past, present and future circumstances"

Or: releasing emotions
