Marketing - Retail
Dutch term or phrase: vechten is hechten
This appears as a title to an article about the retail market for ladders in the Netherlands. I've found a couple of google refs. but I'm still none the wiser as to how to translate it.
Lucy Spring
English translation:low prices create loyalty
Explanation:
'Vechten' here refers to competing on price. E.g. what we would call a budget store/airline/telco/etc. in English is known as a 'prijsvechter' in Dutch. 'Hechten' refers to bonding.

The construction is typical of the shorthand style of signs and notices often found in Dutch shops, e.g. "3 halen = 2 betalen", "aanraken = kopen", "op = op", etc. [the equals sign is pronounced as though it was the word 'is']. So to make a full sentence out of it, I'd say something like: 'the way to keep customers loyal is to keep prices low', or something along those lines. Whatever fits best in your text.

-> "De versproducten van prijsvechters Aldi en Lidl bevatten veel resten bestrijdingsmiddelen."

-> "Prijsvechters vliegen vaak vanaf kleinere vliegvelden. De kosten zijn daar laag en vaak kunt u gratis parkeren. Hieronder vindt u een overzicht van de vliegvelden in en rond Nederland met low-cost airlines die daar vertrekken."

I think I like the pithy version best as a title, so I'll stick with that - many thanks!
