Vanaf de 17e eeuw begonnen individuele wijngoederen te ontstaan, waarvan men wijnen individueel verkocht. De eerste werden dikwijls naar hun eigenaars genoemd. Deze eigenlijk altijd gefortuneerde personen bouwden op hun bezittingen prestigerijke, kasteelachtige onderkomens, soms haast op kleine paleizen lijkende landhuizen die het symbool werden voor zowel het wijngebied als de wijn: de châteaus. Later, vooral in de 19e eeuw, zou dit voorbeeld ***op grote*** door talrijke wijngaardeigenaren worden gevolgd. Het resultaat is een soort Versailles van de wijn, een gigantisch openluchtmuseum van 19e-eeuwse en vroegere architectuur. De visuele rijkdommen van Bordeaux zijn net zo imponerend als de vineuze.
I'm wondering if this may be translated as "on a grand/larger scale" or something to that effect, or if I'm missing the point entirely (would not be the first time).
